This week we are going over adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. We are going to have our first grades from Khan Academy work entered this week. The kids are having trouble getting this permission form paper home and signed by you. I will begin to enter grades or missing grades this week based on their homework on google classroom. Your child needs your permission to sign up, but they can still do the work without a student account. They just need to show me their score. This is a little harder for me and for them. If you are willing and can sign the form have them return it. This will allow them to save any score they have on Khan academy and it also allows them to keep working until they get above 80% or 90% or even until they get to 100%. My requirement is that they get above 80%. For me, this means their practice is sufficient. The goal here is to give them as much practice as is practical so that they are ready for the test. I have attached a copy of the permission form for Khan Academy.
We will test this chapter on October 16th. Their notes are due by the 18th. Because we do our notes online the kids will get a few more days to turn in the notes.
Lastly and probably most importantly, remember Any homework can be corrected for full credit up to the end of the quarter. Also, any TEST or Quiz can be re done on their own time, in my classroom, any time this year. My philosophy about this is that not everyone will test out well the first time and that should not prevent them from getting an A or B. Not every child will understand every set of skills at the same time. So, if they want to put in the effort and come in; I will re teach the skills. Also, they can redo assignments and do many practices on Khan academy. The online practice is very good because they get immediate feedback on each problem with help right in the program should they need it. If they do the practice, they will know the material better and score better on a retake. I give full points for a retake, but they will always get the better of the scores on the two tests. Check your child's latest test score. To my mind they should retake if they score less than a 75%. And they should retake it twice (yes twice) if they do not do too well on the second try. Please be sure to email me at [email protected] with any questions. Mr.Dellwo

We have begun Google Classroom and this allows me to assign practice problems to the kids and ask them questions about math. I can even give online quizzes. Have them go online with you and show you the set up. They are also doing notes on line. These notes for the first Block are due this week.
I am sending home a sign up sheet for Kahn Academy today. When I assign them work they can do the work in google classroom and Kahn academy will retain their progress. Even in the future, they will be able to add a teacher and continue on should they have a teacher next year who also uses Kahn academy for practice problems. The Academy enables them to watch videos explaining math topics should they not remember how we did the work in class. It will not replace homework but it should allow me to shorten assignments from the book. Please look through the note and have them get it back to me. Also tonight have them get a good night sleep. We have a test tomorrow. Mr Dellwo Math 7 update
9 – 9 – 19 Thank you to all I visited with during open house. Please, everyone, if a question arises or you have information about your child that you feel we need to know, contact the school counselor, Mark McCauley or Linde Hennessey. If you become worried about a specific class, (grades etc.) contact that teacher. If there is information you feel the team needs, then contact your child’s advisor. In Math this week we will begin to have homework most nights. Friday, we went over the process of note taking and tomorrow that will continue a bit with added homework. We graded our first assignment Friday morning and today it will be in the grade book. Remember that your child can correct their work for full credit. They may also turn in a missing assignment late for full credit up to the end of the quarter. Your child hopefully brought home a Book Form for you and they to sign regarding the current condition of their book. They were to turn this into me and have their book covered by last Friday. If not they will have a zero in the grade book, and they will need to deal with that zero by getting the form to me and covering their book. Hey that’s all. Have a good week. At least for now it looks like the heat is going to be replaced with some rain. Mr. Dellwo I sent the following email and attachment to all parents for whom I have a valid email. If you read this and know of a parent who did not receive an email from me but should have please let them know about this blog and have them contact the school to help them correct the email address they have in our system. If you are reading this look back to previous Blogs regarding advisor and math class info. I hope this helps.
Below is the email text I sent: Hi, I am your child’s math teacher this year. Since I have children from all 3 7th grade teams, I will not be able to attend all of the open house meetings with 7th grade teams on the 5th of September. I have an advisor with only Wildside Team children so I will attend that meeting, but, following the gathering I will be in room 103 to meet parents. Please drop by to see me and we can talk, or since this is informal, we can set up a time to meet in private or at least have a more in depth phone conversation should you want to do this. I will have a note pad to schedule a meeting or call. I really do thank you all allowing us all the opportunity to teach your children. We will have a great year. Attached please find a outline of the things I will say at open house. The attachment is in text below: September 5 open houseDellwo Math Class basics
b. All tests and quizzes are designed to only take the period to complete, however, kids can come in during the advisor period to finish if they need to.
We all work hard in ADVISERAdviser Class is 35 minutes and is right before lunch. Adviser is a class that gives you time to work on school work and get organised. You must bring work to class and work on it. All 7th grade teams are committed to all students getting their work done and in on time.
Below is a link to a video for covering you book.
Welcome back to school 7th graders. I am excited to be back too.
We will jump right in on the 30th by going over math expectations materials, etc. I want you to begin using graph paper for math. Get some at the store and we will use it for all assignments and tests. For my class you need a correction pen, a pencil, and graph paper every day. When I assign your book you will need to bring it every day too. Go through the following powerpoint to learn more We begin the new school year with the past school years either helping us do better or reminding us of how much we have had a hard time in school. In any case we are here and this year, in this math class, you and I will get better at math and hopefully next year you will feel better about your math skills. I want this to be true whether or not your confident in math now. Everyone improves. That's the goal.
The 6th and 7th period classes are taking a test tomorrow over the 3rd Block (Rational Number operations). They are getting ready to do estimation for the next two days.
Period 1, 2 ,3 are all finishing up Block 2 on Integers. This is negative number work. Period 2 will test on Wednesday and Periods 1 and 3 will test on Friday. In the next few days some will be bringing home order of operations leafs to work on. Next week is a three day week and the kids will be working on measurement and doing a project designed to teach precision. They all will build a boat to specific measurements and create sails of their own design to catch the wind. We will sail them across the floor with specifications for straightness and length. As an added twist this year they will be able to create a design of their own over the 4 day weekend and meet specific criteria for extra points going to homework scores. |
